A Homeowner's Guide to Different Lock Types

Securing your Maplewood, WA home starts with understanding the hardware on your doors. Here’s a breakdown of common residential lock types and their uses, as explained by the experts at Blackwood Mobile Locksmith.

  • Deadbolts (Single & Double Cylinder): This is the most important lock on any exterior door. A deadbolt features a solid metal bolt that extends deep into the doorframe, making it highly resistant to force. A single cylinder operates with a key on the outside and a thumb-turn on the inside, while a double cylinder requires a key on both sides. Best Use: Essential for all exterior doors (front, back, garage-to-house). We strongly recommend a single-cylinder ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt for most residential applications in Maplewood, WA for a balance of security and fire safety.
  • Knob and Lever Handle Locks: These are the standard locks found in the doorknob or lever itself. While convenient for latching a door, they offer minimal security against forced entry and should never be the only lock on an exterior door. Best Use: Primarily for interior doors (bedrooms, bathrooms) where privacy is the main concern, or used in conjunction with a separate, high-quality deadbolt on exterior doors.
  • Mortise Locks: These are heavy-duty locks that are installed into a pocket (or mortise) cut into the edge of the door. They often combine a latch and a deadbolt into a single, robust unit. Best Use: Common in older Maplewood, WA homes and commercial buildings. They are very durable and secure. We offer repair and replacement services for these classic lock types.
  • Keypad & Electronic Locks: These locks offer keyless entry via a numbered keypad, a fob, or a card. They eliminate the worry of lost keys and allow you to grant temporary access to guests or service providers. Best Use: Excellent for front doors, garage entry doors, and home offices. They provide a fantastic blend of security and convenience for busy Maplewood, WA families.
  • Smart Locks: The next evolution of electronic locks, smart locks connect to your home's Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. They allow you to lock and unlock your door remotely via a smartphone app, grant access to others, and receive notifications about who is entering your home. Best Use: For homeowners seeking the ultimate in convenience, control, and monitoring. Ideal for managing access for family, guests, or even vacation rental properties in Maplewood, WA.Choosing the right lock depends on your security needs, budget, and desired convenience. The team at Blackwood Mobile Locksmith can assess your current setup and recommend the best options for your Maplewood, WA home.

Maplewood, WA Insights: Population,
Zip Codes, Influence, and Service Areas

Six families (with last names of Smith, Brown, Pierson, Freeman, Ball and Gildersleeve) came up today's Ridgewood Road and established scattered farms around a center that became Jefferson Village, named after Thomas Jefferson. This settlement, which roughly corresponds to downtown Maplewood today, developed several mills and orchards. John Durand, the son of Hudson River School painter Asher Brown Durand (who was born in Maplewood in 1796), describes the place as a picturesque but slightly backward community with close ties to Springfield. The apple harvest was apparently quite impressive and included the "Harrison" and "Canfield" varieties. By 1815, there were approximately 30 families in the community. Although the residents of the area were predominantly Presbyterian, the first house of worship was a Baptist chapel in 1812. This was in use until 1846 and fell into disrepair until 1858, when it was taken into use as a Methodist Episcopal church.
